Rooney Tours St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant

September 26th, 2008

Today Tom Rooney toured the Florida Power and Light (FPL) St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant on Hutchinson Island.  Tom was briefed about the facility and the efficiency of nuclear power, as well as the facility’s safety plans.

“Today was a great experience and I thank the people at FPL for providing me a first hand look at the plant and the opportunity to learn more about nuclear power,” said Tom Rooney.  “The St. Lucie Plant is a model for how nuclear energy can be produced in a safe and efficient manner as well as providing quality jobs for the surrounding community.  In order for us to gain our energy independence we need to continue to develop nuclear technology as well as other alternatives.  Fossil fuels will not last forever and its important we take these steps now for our children.”

Developing nuclear power as well as wind and solar are all part of the energy plan Tom Rooney announced in June.  Tom will fight in Washington to cut through bureaucracy to allow for the construction of more clean power facilities throughout the nation.

The St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant began operation in the mid-1970s.  The plant is an extremely cost effective producer of electricity, producing about 1,700 million watts of electricity – which can annually power more than a half million homes.
